What Causes Recurrent Acid Reflux Despite Taking Tums?

I have recently been experiencing reflux during the night. Tums helps but I have noticed whenever I swallow food or drink I feel a sensation (not painful) as the food/liquid is going down. I have also somewhat recently started drinking a lot of club soda. Wasn t sure if the carbonization aggravates the esophagus, and what might be going on to cause the sensation I described?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello thank you for writing us here.
The most likely cause of your condition could be reflux which is because of incomplete closure of the sphincter present at the junction of stomach and esophagus.
I would like to suggest you not to eat spicy food for few days and if you have burning sensation, you can take an antacid. And also make sure you take small sips of water throughout the day so you won't feel this. Also no alcohol or smoking please because it aggregates the condition.

Best regards,
Dr Gunjan
