Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter is 17 and has had 10 grand mal seizures since September 2016 when they started. She is currently on 150 mg of Zonegran and is still having breakthrough seizures. She has had diarrhea off and on for 6 weeks. When levels have been drawn they have come back low. I have heard of zonegran causing a blood acidosis. She never misses her meds. Are these side effects causing the levels to be low? If so should we be looking into changing meds with her?
Yes, the diarrhoea is due to Zonegran but I will not advise you to stop it and would not advise reducing the strength either as there has been a marked improvement in your daughter.
You need to talk to your doctor who will advise your daughter to keep her hydrate properly and keep her electrolyte balance in check.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician
