What Causes Recurrent Seizures?

customers Pearl Wilson, Doctor s Assistant Welcome! How can I help with your medical question? You I need to speak with someone about some issues my sister is having. She s been having seizures off and on for almost a year now. They started when she was pregnant with her son about 5 years ago but went away for awhile. She s had a baby girl since then and had no problems while pregnant with her. Recently shes been falling out, about once a week or so. The doctors here say her blood tests are ok there are no tumors or anything that they can see odd in her CT scans, she s had no recent or past brain injurys .they said it s from her ptsd (that shes unmedicated for) recently she fell out three times in a day and now she studders terribly and I can t express the severity of her studder. Enough. The doctors say she had a mini stroke but from her studder i feel like there s way more to it she s not epaleptic and I don t think multiple seizures are leading up to a stroke. The doctors here have no idea what to do and brush it off to ptsd. I think it has something to do with a hormone issue or something like that. We recently realized that her seizures come on when she s getting close to her period, which shes having now 3 days after her stroke she only 25 years old. I need a second opinion on this and need somewhere we can go to really dig into that before she dies can u help me.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
There are many causes of seizures in post partum, one of them the stroke as her doctor told you.
And there is the post partum eclampsia which is associated with high blood pressure and high level of protein in the urine and it's difficult to be diagnosed.
Your sister may have these type of medical condition which is misdiagonsed and the repeated seizures without treatment may be responsable of brain injury.
I think that you suggest to your sister's doctor to do an EEG (electrical study of the brain ) which can help to make the diagnosis .
Hope I helped you
Wish your sister a better health
Best regards
Dr.Noor Farid
