Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Recurring Headaches And Increased Sense Of Smell Post A Hit On Head?
About a week ago, while mowing lawn, I hit the right top side of my head when I ran into a low branch of a tree. My vision blurred for about 10 seconds and I was light-headed. It cleared and I finished mowing. I have been having multiple headaches on the right side of my head since then as well as having an accentuated sense of smell. Are these symptoms related to the injury and should they just clear in time?
Pain at the impact site suggest a contusion over the scalp. Although not sure of the smell disturbance, it may be from associated minor concussion of the smell sensing area of brain.
If there is no history of loss of consciousness or vomiting, and it is already 1 week, chance of a significant head injury is extremely low.
You can try taking analgesics like paracetamol 3 times a day for 3-5 days to see the response.
If pain is not relieved by then, or the area becomes increasingly swollen/hot, kindly see your doctor for further management. The smell may take few weeks-months to get normalised.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK
