What Causes Recurring Radiating Pain From Upper Back To Neck?

Hi. I am a 31 year old woman. A little over weight and family history of heart disease on both sides. I get sharp pains all the time in the chest that shoot through my left side. I go to the doctor often about it because I am so paranoid because my father passed at 47 from a heart attack and I have 2 small children. Today I have had pains in my upper back on the left side in the middle of my shoulder blade and neck all day. It s not constant pain it comes in waves and last about 1 second each time. I do have stress in my life. Does this sound like my heart? or nerves?

Hello,

Recurring radiating pain from the upper back to neck may be due to irritated or compressed nerve, it can also be due to poor posture, injury, improperly lifting something heavy, etc. Medical conditions causing such symptoms are slipped disc, degenerative disc disease, herniated or bulging disc in the spine, etc. You are suggested to get clinically examined by an orthopedics, get blood workouts, urinalysis and imaging tests done so that the pathology is detected and you get treatment at the earliest.

Apply pain relieving ointments with gentle massage, you can use pain relieving sprays also. Take acetaminophen, one SOS when needed after food to ease discomfort. However, such symptoms and pain on the left side may be indicative of developing CAD, coronary artery disease. If obese, reduce weight. Get clinically examined by a cardiologist, get all lipid function tests done. Get all routine examinations (EKG, echo, stress tests, etc.) done. This is to stay on the safer side. If pathology is detected you will be accordingly treated with diet control and conservative treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
