What Causes Recurring Seizures In A Child With Down’s Syndrome?
My son is 14 almost 15 years old weighing 31 kgs and 4 11 ft tall having downsyndrome he gets tonic-clonic seizures for which he used to have Tegrital 200 tablets thrice a day and levesam 100 mg syrup twice a day for the past three years. But since his seizures were still prevailing another doctor suggested he take levesam 1000 mg, levesam 500 mg,Valparin chrono 300 mg tablets. In the morning we give him levesam 500 mg and valparin 300 mg since initially levesam 1000 mg used to make him very drowsy. However,he gets his seizures mostly during the night and we noticed levesam 500 and valparin 300 alone doesn t help curb his seizures but giving levesam 1000 mg or giving two tablets of levesam 500 mg efficiently curbs them plus he s also relatively active during that time. Is this dosage alright? What other medicine would you suggest instead? p.s my son cannot talk.
Down’s syndrome has increased risk for development of Epilepsy. Levetiracetam dose- 1000–3000 mg/d;Valproic acid (valparin) dose-20–60 mg/kg/day. Initial combination therapy combines first line drugs (valproic acid, levetiracetam, as in this case). If these drugs are unsuccessful, then the addition of other drugs such as topiramate, zonisamide, lacosamide, or tiagabine is indicated.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
