Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Regression Of Hydrocephalus While On L-dopa?
My husband was diagnosed with np hydrocephalus in 2013 & had a VP shunt implanted. Hes recovered slowly (about 6 months) and then 6 months later started to regress. He was hospitalized earlier this year with a CNS infection and the shunt was removed. The neurosurgeon said he does not think that it is a fluid issue causing his symptoms. A new neurologist said it looks like NPH, but my husband s symptoms could be due to PD and he will he starting on L-dopa soon. Do you see any problem with taking L-dopa if PD is not the correct diagnosis?
Parkinson disease is diagnosed clinically. A clinical test needs to be performed like walking, writing, etc. One of the tests is determining if the patient responds to administration of the dopamine. In the case of your husband, since the L-Dopa administration is done under the close supervision of a Neurologist this should safe.
The neurologist will be able to determine if L-Dopa will be needed further based on the response and symptoms improvement under therapy. Please follow-up with your the treating neurologist if your husband doesn't tolerate L-Dopa as the dosage takes time to be adjusted properly for each individual patient.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
