What Causes Rise In Blood Pressure Level Despite Taking Triamterene?

I am on triamiterene currently for blood pressure maintenence but recently I have been having some blood pressure spikes in the 180/100 ranges with tingles, fuzziness etc. They last a few hours and typically go away but the are getting more frequent. What could be causing these BP spikes. Not on any new medications and havn t been eating anything different. Thanks in advance. Diane

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Triamterene is a potassium- sparing diuretic, that'how it lowers your blood pressure. If your blood pressire is rising even with the diuretic use it means that you have an electrolite level measured and a cardiologist consult so he can add any other antihypertensive drug such as Enalapril etc.Triamterene may be combined as well with Hydrochlorthiazide, but first must have an cardiac examination.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
