Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. In 2001 I had gastric bypass surgery (laproscopic). In 2002 I had umbilical hernia repair and abdominoplasty. In 2004 I had perforated ulcer repair (open). In 2005 I had incisional hernia repair with mesh inserted. A few days ago I started having severe abdominal internal itching (mainly to the right of my belly button) that is driving me crazy. I try to scratch it as best as I can by pressing hard and rubbing. It helps some but also hurts in some places. I have taken benedryl, which does not help. I took Tylenol last night (because it was keeping me from sleeping and I was desperate to try anything) and I BELIEVE it helped because I was finally able to sleep. This morning when I awoke I had no itching but it has since returned. Any ideas what it could be?
Noted the history of In 2001 I had gastric bypass surgery (laproscopic). In 2002 I had umbilical hernia repair and abdominoplasty. In 2004 I had perforated ulcer repair (open). I try to scratch it as best as I can by pressing hard and rubbing. It helps some but also hurts in some places, taken Benadryl and Tylenol - no effect. With the history of multiple surgeries in the abdomen and abdominal wall, the most probable cause can be nerve entrapment in the scar tissue. This can cause any sort of symptoms ranging from itching, burning, neuralgic pain.
I would advise you the following: Consult your Doctor for clinical evaluation, examination and decide the cause and to be confirmed by further tests like X-ray and Ultrasound of abdomen. Ask for the trial of medications as per the cause he thinks so.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
