What Causes Severe Acid Reflux?

I have trouble with acid reflux and lately, I have to eat so early to avoid having it relax when I go to bed. I need at least 4 hours between dinner and bedtime. Even then, certain things like garlic, tomato sauces, chocolate, spicy foods, seem to bother my stomach. I worry that it might be more than simple acid indigestion or reflux. I take Prevacid and Tums most every day.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for choosing HCM for your query.

The symptoms are suggestive of GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease).
GERD occurs when stomach acid or, occasionally, stomach content, flows back into your food pipe (esophagus).

The backwash (reflux) irritates the lining of your esophagus and causes GERD.

You need to have life style modifications including the food you consume.

Avoid hot and spicy foods that you continue to take.
Avoid smoking/alcohol if you take.
Use yoghurt or curd in your dinner.
Elevate the head end of your bed by 45 degree.

Instead of Tums, you can take Domperidone along with Prevacid for the relief of acid reflux disease.

Despite of the above measures, if you do not get relief you may please visit a gastro enterologist for possible endoscopic examination of food pipe and the stomach for further evaluation.

Hope the suggestions given above are of great help to you.
Kindly rate the answer, if convinced.
Regards.
