What Causes Severe Backache Along With Umbilical Hernia?

Hello: I have had four back surgeries, the first being in 1980, the last being April 28 this year and the perevious being six months prior to that. I am still having dehabilitating back pain. I also have what appears to be to me, a rather large abdominal or umbilical hernia, or a combination of the two. Can these types of hernias cause low and middle back pain, as well as disks herniating. I have had four different discs which have herniated which required surgery. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank You, Richard Popovich

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Severe backache may be related to lumbar hernia. Stretching & tearing of the abdominal wall with soft tissues bulging causes severe or dull ache in the area affected.

Pain & discomfort can be triggered by simple tasks like bending, lifting, straining or simply coughing.

Take care of your postures, it is very difficult to tell if the discomfort is due to hernia without clinical examination.

You are suggested to get physically examined by a GP, get assessed & treated. You may need to get CT of abdomen & pelvis done to rule out ureteral stones, diverticulitis & incarcerated hernia.

Disc hernia sometimes heals on their own or by medical treatment otherwise you may need open discectomy, endoscopic microdiscectomy, cutaneous discectomy or laminectomy, etc depending upon the severity of the hernia & discomfort.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
