Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Im in vacation in florida and two days ago i began to feel a very strong piercing and aching that felt as though someone was driving a toothpick through my ear. There is no water in side and it aches very sharply. I have woken up crying and writhing in pain for days, what is it.
Sudden severe earache in adults is very likely due to otitis externa. This is an infection of the skin of the ear canal and can be very painful. It is best to have your ear examined with your doctor to confirm the diagnosis and the doctor will give you ear drops with antibiotics to settle down the infection.
Meanwhile, you may use ibuprofen 600-800 mg every 6-8 hours after food to help with the pain and also local warm compresses. Try to avoid water from entering the ear and also put some cotton in the ear when you shower to not allow water to enter there.
