Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My Dr. increased my daily dose of Losartan from 50mg to 100 mg about a month ago. I have been very tired and lethargic. Also it seems that when I sit down to rest I start to fall asleep. Also, my legs are hurting and I feel that I can t hardly get around. Also, feel weak. Do you think the increase may have anything to do with these symptoms. I am 69 and have never had a problem of falling asleep in the daytime, have always had lots of energy.
There are a lot of possibilities here, but any side effect that is truly unliveable means the drug has to be stopped. It is unlikely that any of the possibilities is a PERMANENT effect of the drug and.... blood pressure lowered too much (this is really really common. Furthermore, the readings of blood pressure by cuff are somewhat BUNK. The mechanized cuffs are off very frequently and a manual reading has to be done at some point. BUT even this can be wrong in the elderly. The pressure cuff presses down on the arteries and when they close off, that's the blood pressure BUT in the elderly the outside of the vessels can be stiff and never close and this gives a very high reading REGARDLESS OF WHAT IS INSIDE THE VESSELS). so, pressure might be too low when treated.
There can be electrolyte effects from this medicine. They can be deadly.
There are unlikely allergic effects from this medicine. Really rare.
