What Causes Severe Fatigue?

I am experiencing some very bad fatigue. ALL the time. It s awful when I drive. I feel like I could fall asleep at any time, even when I m working, driving, or have things going on that should stimulate my mind. This has been going on since August or September.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I'm sorry to hear you've been having fatigue lately. Fatigue is not an easy symptom to find the cause because there are many different things that can cause fatigue. In order to determine the cause in your case, I would ask a complete history of all your medical problems, medications, sleep problems, mood disorders, and ask if there is any substance abuse.

My physical exam would focus on your thyroid, lymph nodes, cardiovascular and neuromuscular systems, and I would likely check blood for complete blood count, electrolytes, renal and hepatic function tests, thyroid stimulating hormone, and creatinine kinase if any muscle pain or weakness was present.

This would be where I would start. As you can see, it requires a thorough work-up, and would take time for your doctor to investigate. I would recommend you see your doctor and hopefully he or she can begin to figure out the cause of your fatigue and hopefully start to treat it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
