What Causes Severe Headaches After Insertion Of A Brain Shunt?

Hi, my 87 year old mother had a shunt placed in her head in 1999. It worked well for a number of years, but recently she has developed severe headaches. We have taken her to several doctors. They said we should take her back to the doctor who performed the procedure because he knows what he did and how he did it. The doctor who did the procedure says he does not want to touch it. What are other options? What are the risks of having a shunt removed completely? I appreciate any information you can provide.

Hi,

She can try analgesics like Acetaminophen or Tramadol for pain relief.

If pain persists, better to consult her neurologist and get evaluated.

You have to go for a MRI scan to rule out other causes and confirm whether the shunt is in place or not.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
