What Causes Severe Muscle Pain After Taking Lovastatin?

I took lovastatin for a couple years and then became very sick with severe muscle pain and extreme weakness. There were days I could hardly walk. Was unable to even Swiffer floors. Generally I was a very active 65 yr old male walk 5 and 10 K once each per week. Kayaking 4 to 5 mi once a wee and riding my bicycle 20 to 30 mi once or twice per week. All of that stopped! I then was changed to Crestor and my symptoms continued. Went to a neurologist and found some deterioration of lumbar region and also in neck. Got steroid shots and also a nerve block for left leg pain. Helped but not well. Then my dr. after 2 years figured I had peripheral neuropathy b/c I told him my toes hurt while in the recliner so I had to take off my socks. Anyway, I m on gabapentin with 100 MG taking 2 in the AM one at 3 PM and 2 at bedtime. 90% relief! However, my energy level is not what it was. Yes, I m 2 years older at 67, but after a bike ride I need to hit the recliner for a couple hours and I sleep 75 % of it. My total Cholesterol is at 245. Tri s 86, HDL 43, LDL 185, VLDL 17 and Ratio of HDL is 5.7 my dr. wants me to go on Lipitor at 20 once a day. I am so reluctant.. I m thinking of doing 20MG every other day to see what happens. I can t afford any more damage to my nerves... What do you think?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms seem to be related to side effects of Atorvastatin.

One of the most common side effects of taking statins is muscle pain.

It may cause soreness, tiredness or weakness in your muscles.

I suggest you to stop this medication and consider taking an alternative medication such as Fibrates.

Meanwhile, I suggest using anti-inflammatory medication to treat the pain such as Ibuprofen.

I also suggest taking a magnesium supplement and rest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
