Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 37 year old husband has been having extreme nausea for the last week. The nausea is worse when his stomach is empty. He has also been having increased fatigue and says his stool has an orange color to it. No black stools, no diarrhea but his bowel patterns have changed. I am a nurse and was suspecting an ulcer so I had him start Omeprazole. He has had 5 doses (one a day) of Omeprazole DR 20mg and also zantac as needed. He doesn t feel he is improving. No vomiting. Does this sound like an ulcer or should we be concerned it is something worse?
An ulcer is a possible cause for nausea. It is usually found in persons with a previous history of reflux or gastritis. If there is no previous history then ulceration is not as likely.
Since there is no improvement at all with the Zantac or Omeprazole then it may be best for him to be seen for assessment.
Some of the other causes of nausea include- a side effect of medication, infection, e.g. gastritis or hepatitis or pancreatitis or appendicitis etc., head injury, related to the inner ear (Meniere's disease, BPPV, vestibular neuronitis.)
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James,
