Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Severe Numbness In The Lower Lip And Chin?
My lower lip has felt slightly numb for several months. I’ve ignored it because it was only an odd feeling. Today the right side of my lip really felt numb along with the right chin. After a while the chin became alright but the lip remains the same.
I can understand your concern. Numbness without any apprent cause develops in a particular area when the nerve supplying sensations to that particular area is damaged or is being pressed by some reason.
If you have suffered injury to the area or have been to dentist and was given anesthesia in the lower front part of the jaw, then there are chances that the nerve might have been injured. In that case, it might take time from several weeks to several months for the nerve fibers to regenerate and to regain the sensation to the area.
However, if no such history is present, then you should visit a dentist or oral and maxillofacial surgeon for the clinical examination and examinations such as x-ray, CT Scan and/or MRI of the area to rule out presence of any lesion in the area that might be interfering with the nerve function. If such lesion is present, then surgical removal of the lesion is advised. The nerve may regain its function in several weeks to several months.
I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. Take care.
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
