What Causes Severe Pain In The Temple While Suffering From Acute Rhinitis?

I have a severe headache on the left hand side of my face with a throbbing pain that leads around the temple, eye and upper jaw into teeth. Head ache has been consistent for 2 days now. No relieve from aspirin or anti inflammatory or anti histamines, I take nasonex one daily to assist with acute rhinitis. I have suffered from pain before due to swelling of maxillary sinus lining how ever it has never been this debilitating. Pain slightly eases with pressure to temple and thobs as soon as pressure is released. There is also slight swelling present to the left hand side of face. What can I do? No one can figure out what it is. Help! I m in so much pain

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Dear. You are having sinusitis, probably maxillary sinusitis again. If the problem is recurring again and again inspite of taking medications then you may have to undergo a surgery. Kindly consult an ENT surgeon.

In the majority of cases, sinusitis will resolve itself without treatment. Many patients find that home treatments provide some relief. These treatments include some OTC (over-the-counter) medications.

1. Steam inhalation - breathing steam from a bowl of hot water - not boiling. The water may have some drops of menthol oil. Although patients do feel they experience some relief, this treatment has not been scientifically proven. Standing or sitting in a very steamy shower may sometimes provide the same effect.

2. Nasal Irrigation - this is also known as sinus irrigation, sinus rinse, or sinus lavage. It is a home procedure that involves a salt water rinse to clear the nasal passages.

3. Warm compress - applying a warm compress gently to the affected areas of the face can relieve some symptoms.

4. Sleeping with the head raised - prop up pillows so that the head is higher than it usually is; this may reduce the amount of pressure around the sinuses and reduce discomfort and pain.

5. Painkillers - painkillers can improve the fever.

6. Decongestant tablets - these may reduce swelling and allow the sinuses to drain.

7. Decongestant sprays - same effect as the tablets. However, patients should not use them for more than 1 week. The risk of making the blockage worse rises if decongestant sprays are used for prolonged periods. If in doubt, ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice.

If none of these home remedies work after about a week, the individual should see a doctor. The doctor may decide the sinusitis has been caused by a bacterial infection and prescribe antibiotics.

Surgery for chronic sinusitis is reserved for patients who have not responded to medical therapy. Medical treatment should include 3-6 weeks of antibiotics, nasal steroids, and nasal saline irrigations.

Hope i have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I ll be glad to help you.
