What Causes Severe Pain That Runs Thru The Hand Till The Fingers?

Hi Dr, My sister 34 Yo, house wife started developing a severe pain that runs thru the hand till the fingers from back of her head. At times, she experiences numbness and this pain wakes her up during nights. When consulted general physician, we were told not be serious however, his medication could not control the pain. Pls suggest wht to do. I am planning to see an ortho in Hyd, is that the right thing to do? Thanks for all your help in advance.
