What Causes Sharp Numbing Pain At The Bottom Of Bicep Post Workouts?
I m a college athlete who is always in the gym. Recently I ve noticed after working out my biceps, several hours after the workout, sometimes when I do a movement that involves me curling my bicep, I get a sharp numbing pain (kind of feels like my bicep is getting an electric shock) at the bottom part of my bicep. The pain doesn t exactly hurt. it s more of a shocking sensation than anything. It s really sharp and does not radiate. Do I have anything to worry about?
The pain described appears to be coming from the muscle itself or nerves supplying the biceps. In an athlete, various causes for the described pain includes; disruption of muscle fibers, small tears of tendons and ligaments, wear and tear of shoulder joint cartilage and compression of nerve supplying the muscle during strength training.
It is important to stop any exercise that exacerbate pain for time being , avoid any kinds of massage or weight training. An X-ray of shoulder and forearm, nerve conduction study and detailed physical examination of upper limb will be needed to make a diagnosis. I suggest you to see a GP, and restart your training regime only after find out the cause of pain.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ayesha Shareef, General & Family Physician
