What Causes Sharp Pain In The Leg Weeks After Partial Knee Replacement Surgery?

I had a medial partial knee replacement ten weeks ago. After week five, I was walking into the kitchen and turned without picking up my foot. I felt a sharp pain in the outside of my leg. I am worried because walking down a ramp produces that same sharp pain. Could I have torn my meniscus?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You have history of having partial knee replacement surgery, after 5 weeks you are having sharp pain in the outside of the leg. You also turned in the kitchen without picking up your foot. You are continuing to have that same sharp pain. Some patients do complain of pain post partial knee replacement surgery. It commonly occurs when the implant aseptic loosening) is not working in the way it should or when there is some kind of nerve damage.

Blood clots, deep vein thrombosis and infection may be the other causes of sharp pain. You are suggested not to strain yourself unnecessarily, take the help of walking aid, cane and crutches. Restrict yourself to light activity. Get clinically examined. You can arrange for a follow up appointment with your treating surgeon, you should get a repeat blood tests and investigations done to be on the safer side. You may need a repair surgery or specialized revision implant.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
