What Causes Sharp Pain In Thumb Radiating Towards Arm Inspite Of Using Acetaminophen?

I have sharp pain that begins on my thumb and shoots up my arm sometimes with no movement at all, but, if I try to stretch my arm the pain shoots causing me to pull my arm back. I know my mom said if it hurts when you do it-- don t do it. I am a computer analyst which requires use of my hand/arm all day and it aches constantly. Acetaminophen helps but it has been going on for a week now and getting old....

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Experiencing sharp pain in the thumb and shooting to the arms could be due to nerve compression in the cervical region of your back bone.
Kindly get a X-ray and MRI scan done of the Cervical spine.
Depending on the status, you would require to take analgesic with muscle relaxant like Diclofenac with Chloroxazone combination medication.
Kindly consult Orthopaedician for assistance. You might also require physiotherapy and use of cervical collar.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
