What Causes Sharp, Stabbing Ear Pain?

Hello I have been experiencing sharp, stabbing ear pain in the left ear for 7 months now. The ENT I visited gave me nasal spray, sudafed both of which did nothing. Pain is now getting more intense, does not go away with tylenol, and is very deep in the ear, and behind the ear. Any idea what this could be?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The nasal spray and sudafed would have helped if the pain was related to allergies eg allergic rhinitis or sinusits.

To determine the cause, you may need imaging such as CT to take a look at the inner aspect of the ear and connected areas.

Possible causes of persistent ear pain are: (1)infection
(2)neuralgia
(3)tmj dysfunction
(4)presence of a mass
(5)eustachian tube dysfunction

I hope this helps
