What Causes Shortness Of Breath And Positive D- Dimer Result?

I have been having shortness of breath the last few days, went to doc yesterday and BP was 180/90. This was with the 3 antihypertensives I take. Anyway, said my heart sounded ok and lungs sounded ok. No swelling in limbs. Ordered a d dimer and today was told it came back positive and they will schedule me for CT sometime next week. I am on my period now, could that cause this? I had thyroid biopsy about 6 weeks ago now, could that be it? I am prone to worry excessively and am trying not to.

Thank you for writing on health care magic.
I understand your concern. You shouldnt worry too much. You scheduled for CT which mens that its not a urgency to do it. As a general rule prior to do a d dimer its been done a prediction score for the risk of pulmonary embolus.
Im convinced that your doctor is suspecting pulmonary embolism. pulmonary emboli are clots that normaly are formed in the veins of lower extremity that travel and block pulmonary arteries. As I see you dont have any pain in the limbs which is a good thing and lowers the risk that you might have trombus in the lower extremities. You have had a biopsy of your thyroid but the resjlts of biopsy are not shown. Its a great importance to know the results of it. The biopsy may be related to these high d dimer. Periods generaly do not increase the d dimer The cuases for high D dimer excluding the clot formation include infection which increases ddimer at high level. Age , whith it increases somehow and some other causes like pregnancy, trauma, surgery.
You just have to wait, and i know is not easy to stay with fear but a CT is going to be performed and a diagnosis holefuly will come and things can go for better. wish you good health
