What Causes Sleeplessness And Throat Swelling Inspite Of Taking Aerius For Tinnitus?

I have tinitus since 4 weeks. It became when I started to take aerius anti-histamine to cure stuck left Eustachian tube, at 3rd day. Then became so strong so I couldn t sleep 72 hours. And went to the other ear also. The throat felt with slight inflamation which tend to feel stronger if I force it to swallow several minutes (empty, without food) (trying this way to drive the blood in the head). The noise disappears after 7-8 hours standing/moving/working and slowly appears when l m in the bed for more than 20-30 minutes. The side on which the head is lying is important - the noise grows stronger on the upper side of the head. I believe it s from the nerves which come out of the inner-ear. I don t know what s around the inner-ears - empty space/liquid/soft tissue ? I still have very good hearing, tests show linear, better than average people. I have the left Eustachian tube still feeling sore despite taking aerius, but now it s not stuck, it s ventilating. I ve stopped aerius at 15th day, now using k-steroid nazonex in my nose. My doctor doesn t know what it is, but thinks it s kind of viral labyrinthtit so I take aciclovir also.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the Aerius is containing Desloratidine which is anti-allergic molecule used for variety of allergy conditions. It functions as partial sinusitis relief of stuffy nose, ear ache and else, but your condition does not sound to be simple allergy. I suspect possible otitis media or swelling tympanic membrane through bacterial infection and that requires intensive care with:
- Systemic antibiotics as macrolides or beta lactam with beta lactamase inhibitors (eg: mox + clavulanic acid)
- Analgesic with anti inflammatory as diclofenac with serratiopeptidase
- Application of anti bacterial drops as moxifloxacin
- Keeping the ear covered with sterile cotton plugs
- Control of blood sugar

Remain in regular follow up with your ENT specialist for best results.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
