Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had never had difficulty sleeping until I had a 2 level cervical fusion in 2003. I have not had a full nights sleep since. I have taken Ambien eversince. it used to be 10mg, but I have cut back to 2.5 to 5 mg. I am exhausted when I get up in the morning and exhausted when I get home from work.
Insomnia is a common disorder that may be present alone or with other mental illnesses like anxiety, depression etc. I would like to know whether or not you have other symptoms like feeling sad, loss of interest in work, pessimistic thoughts, feeling anxious and having worries most of the time as then you will need other medications. if its just sleep disturbance I would advice you to follow sleep hygiene first (waking up and sleeping at a fixed time, avoiding TV, laptop, mobile post evening, using bed only for sleep, going to bed only when you are sleepy, till then do some light reading, workout in morning, if you dont get sleep for a few minutes in bed get up start reading and return to bed when sleepy again, warm bath in evening, refraining from sleeping in day). following these simple steps you should be able to improve your sleep. practice these for few weeks. If not then only medications should be tried mostly under supervision. Hope you sleep well!!
