What Causes Sore Throat Along With Stomach Ache?

My 20 year old son had a sore throat Friday morning and went to a walk in clinic. He was swabbed for strep...but did not have that. Dr said his throat looked raw and nasty. He prescribed doxycycline hyclate (VIBRAMYCIN) 100 mg tablets for 7 days (twice per day). He is now having stomach pains/cramps (very painful). Should we stop these and ask for a different antibiotic? He has taken antibiotics before and they have caused some diareah (can t spell) but never before have they caused pains/cramps like these.

Hi,

Doxycycline can cause antibiotic-induced diarrhea and abdominal discomfort.

I would advise that he should take a probiotic having Lactobacillus to treat this symptom of abdominal discomfort.

If the symptoms persist, he should consult his treating doctor for a change in dose or change in antibiotic.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
