What Causes Stomach Cramps?

i have really bad stomach cramps that feel like menstrual cramps. 2 days ago i had my period but i was not supposed to because i am on birth control. last night and today the cramps are so severe i had to stay in bed, but i am no longer bleeding. what is happening?
