What Causes Stomach Discomfort?

I have been having that quesy feeling in your stomach that you get when you have not eaten but it is still there when I finish eating. I am 59 years old and am on no medications except for Calcium and Vitamin D3. I am pre-diabetic and need to lose some weight and change my diet.

Hello,
Thank you for your query.

I believe that you may have gastritis. This is when the normal acid in the stomach is either too much or when your diet is causing inflammation in your stomach.
Helicobacter pylori infection can also cause these symptoms.

I recommend :
-a physician consult
-proton pump inhibitors (pantoprazole 40 MG) an hr before meals, once at bed time only for 2 weeks.
-an electrocardiogram and echocardiogram to make sure it has nothing to do with the heart (can happen in some individuals)
This should help with mild to moderate acidity. If you still have the discomfort, you will need an endoscopy to check for cause and severity of the peptic disease.

In the meantime:
-avoid staying hungry for too long.
-have smaller but frequent meals. Chew food thoroughly.
-avoid spicy, oily foods and sugary, carbonated beverages.
-limit caffeine to a cup a day
-drink plenty of water (abt 3/ day) after confirming with your doctor that your heart is fine.
-however, avoid water during meals & for a half hr afterward. Stick to warm or room temperature water (avoid cold drinks). Small sips with food, if necessary.
-don't lay down for 2 hrs after a main meal.
-if you smoke, it's time to quit.
-avoid fruit within an hour of a main meal.
These measures will reduce the inflammation in your stomach.
Hope this helps and you feel better soon. Wish you good health
