Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Swelling And Discoloration In Ankles After A Foot Fracture?
I was diagnosed with a closed fracture in my foot yesterday. Today my ankle is swelling (no where near the fracture) and has started to discolor. While walking up my stairs just now I felt a sharp pain, like a pop, on the side of my calf, where I already have some tightness from my fall. Should I be concerned and see my doctor again?
Hi & Welcome to HCM. The symptoms described in your query are suggestive of complication of fracture called as ' Compartment syndrome' which develops due to reduced blood supply and nerve dysfunction. Because of the reduced blood supply the tissues undergo ischemic changes. You need to consult your treating orthopedic surgeon immediately for an urgent decompression to prevent severe ischemia. All potentially constricting dressings, casts and splints must be removed. Surgical procedures like open fasciotomy with or without debridement may be required to relieve the pressure. Hope this answers your query.
