What Causes Swelling And Pain In The Neck?

I had surgery about one &1/2 months ago to remove a body tumor between the carotid arteries. I still have a lot of swelling and pain in my neck from about my earlobe down. it is still very painful and difficult to swallow. I have not been able to eat solid food yet. Is this normal? I am starting speech therapy next week.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are experiencing post-surgery symptoms. Post-surgery, pain & swelling do persist due to inflammation, infection or injury to the nerve. Visit your surgeon for a follow-up treatment & get physically examined.

Post-surgery some patients develop vascular complications. Injury to the vagus nerve causes the development of hoarseness of voice. Yes, do continue with your speech therapy & take the medications as advised.

Do not be careless with yourself, take semi-solid or liquid food for some more time as you recover.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
