What Causes Swelling In Cheeks And Under Jaw Bone?
Hello 2 nights ago my cheeks swelled up like a chipmunk and a large ball was under my right jaw and last night I noticed my collar bones have swollen areas. I was extremely tired yesterday. I use nicotine gum a little to help me quick smoking but I haven't used it much lately. I've been using it for about the last 4 months. The doctor is testing me for mumps. Can this actually be from the nicotine gum? I'm 41 yrs old.
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..
As per your complain the symptoms of bilateral facial swelling with a lump under the jaw which can be swollen lymph nodes seems to be most probably be due to viral infection and is known as MUMPS PAROTITIS leading to inflammation and swelling in the Parotid Gland which is a major salivary gland.. It is a highly contagious infection and you need to be careful as you can communicate the infection to others.. It can be diagnosed with clinical symptoms as well as investigations like Polymerase chain reaction and serum amylase as it is increased in mumps.. There is no curative medicine for it and if it is diagnosed the treatment can be supportive like taking tylenol for pain , taking plenty of fluids, doing altenate warm and cool compresses over the swelling and taking sufficient rest..
Hope this information helps.
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
