What Causes Swelling In Legs And Foot While Treating A Blood Infection?

One year ago, I was hospitalized with a blood infection and several blood clots in my abdomen area. The blood infection went into my pelvic bone. After a month in the hospital and rehabilitation, I went home on IV antibiotics and other meds including Warfarin. I have been experiencing swelling in my legs especially my right leg and foot. Some days are worse than others. I have a skin issue on my right leg with multiple open sores irritating the problem. The last over few days I have felt something on the inside of my leg that seems to break loose and then lodge further up. It has done this three times. Could it be as blood clot? It went from my ankle to my calf to my knee.

Welcome to HealthcareMagic,
With your history, I suggest you seek medical evaluations right away. In answer to your question, yes, it could be a clot. The right leg with multiple open sores needs to be treated right away or you may end up in the same situation as you were one year ago.

You do not like doctors? Please, do not wait so long before you seek help when you know things aren't right. This is not a forum question now. It is an issue for your doctor within 24 hours or the Emergency Department now with follow-up with your doctor later and on-going treatment.

Another thing, it is a small thing, but when you are on coumarin try to be consistent with your foods that contain levels of vitamin K as this can interfere with the anti-clotting mechanism of the drug. Vitamin K containing foods are: cabbage, liver, eggs, spinach, broccoli, sprouts, collards, and other green vegetables. It is not that you cannot eat them, but if you do, then you should eat the same amount every day - be consistent.

I do hope you see someone about your issues immediately and take better care of yourself.

My best wishes. Kathryn Shattler,MS, RDN
