Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Swelling In The Ankles And Feet While On A Pacemaker?
I had a pacemaker put in the first part of February of this year, February 2017 and am now pacemaker dependent. Pacemaker was put in after diagnosis of CHF and A-Fib; when the TEE was performed - there was a sledging of a possible blood clot showing attached to my heart wall so therefore an ablation could not be performed and instead cardiologist suggested a pacemaker. Lately, I often get swelling in ankles and feet (once in my right leg also). Usually swelling is only in my right ankle and foot but at times in both ankles/feet. Very painful to walk. I take Lisinopril, Norvasc and Toprol along with Lasix 20 mg twice daily. I do not eat a lot of salt, am diabetic....just took my vitals with BP 127/67 and heart rate of 63. Could this be related to my pacemaker?
Swollen ankles and swollen feet are common and usually not cause for concern, particularly if you have been standing or walking a lot. But feet and ankles that stay swollen or are accompanied by other symptoms could signal a serious health problem.
Possible cause is LymphedemaL is filtered through the lymph nodes, which trap and destroy unwanted substances, such as bacteria. When there is a problem with the vessels or lymph nodes, however, the fluid's movement can be blocked. Untreated, lymph buildup can impair wound healing and lead to infection and deformity. Lymphedema is common following radiation therapy or removal of the lymph nodes in patients with cancer. If you have undergone cancer treatment and experience swelling, see your doctor right away.
