Hello! Welcome to HealthcareMagic!

The following are some of the causes of your symptoms :

1) Any acute kidney failure.
2) Congestive cardiac failure.
3) Nephrotic syndrome(related to kidney).
4) Cirrhosis of liver.
5) Pain medications like Ibuprofen, Naproxen when used in high doses for prolonged periods.
So, your doctor might be asking about the following :

1) History of diabetes, hypertension.
2) Your age, weight (obesity if any).
3) Any history of kidney or heart disease.

Physicians may even advise you to undergo a few investigations (ECG,serum creatinine, blood urea, liver function tests etc) that would aid in arriving at a specific diagnosis and thus an appropriate treatment.

Hope my answer clarifies your doubts. All the best. For further clarifications, please let me know. I'm always here to assist you.

Thank you.

Take care
