What Causes Swelling In The Mouth After Taking Gemfibrozil?

I have been taking Gemfibrozil/600MG for several years, diagnosed by my doctor. My mouth{top lip} started swelling a great deal today. I am planning to go to my Doctor tomorrow, but I wanted to know what to do about it. I took Benadryl earlier and so far the swelling hasn t gone down!

hello there,first of all,try to relax.Most swelling takes time to go down.may take a a couple of day to a week even.

Gemfibrozil as u know is used to lower the levels of fats (lipids) called cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood.most drugs have some common and some rare side effects.

gemfibrozil very rarely can severe oedema of lip,tongue and tongue which might have happened in your case.it is called angioedema.and it can occur spontaneously for a drug which you were routinely taking also

i would advise you to take montelukast and levocetrizine tablet orally and also a methylprednisolone tablet 4mg twice daily till you see the doctor assuming you have no conditions other than higher blood cholestrol levels.

please make sure you did not have any different food item today or any history of insect bite/sting while in your sleep.these also could be the triggering cause

if gemfibrozil is the cause,you could switch over to fenofibrate for lowering your cholestrol levels and i advise to strictly ensue a good diet and exercise regimen alongside the medication for long term
