What Causes Throat Discomfort While On Doxycycline?

I take Doxycycline for a severe skin (face) infection, for 3 days now. My throat feels rough, at night I cough a lot and a lot of mucus is expelled. During the day it is better. Is it because I lie in bed at night? The days I spend in an upright position. What I can do about it? Also, can I drink water (no food) during the 2 hours before I take the meds

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Doxycyclin does not cause a cough/excessive mucus as a side effect... If there is no associated upper respiratory infection... it can be due to-
-Allergic action to the drug... needs examination by treating doctor & change on medicine if needed
- loss of lactobacilli (causing soreness & irritation or ulcers in oral cavity leading to excess salivation & mucus secretion... collected in the oral cavity to cause the symptoms... needs B complex/folic acid/lactobacillus supplement.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
