Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Throat Irritation And Cough After Eating Peanut Butter And Nuts?
I m 53 and within the last year or so I think I ve developed an allergy to peanuts/nuts/peanut butter. When eaten late at night I ve end up having scratchy throat, and coughing which sometimes has led to vomitting. Last night I mistakenly ate some store bought candy that had peanut butter and nuts in its ingredients. I had similar symptoms into the early morning hours which ended with a black liquid coming from one nostril. It was like a faucet had been turned on with a steady stream of a black liquid. It lasted for a number of seconds, then quit. Any thoughts? I don t remember this happening before and if it had, nothing to this extreme.
From your description, I am of the opinion that yes, it is an incidence of urticaria due to peanut. I would suggest you keep an adrenaline injection pen always with you in case of acute allergy which may develop into laryngeal edema causing an obstruction in breathing.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ashish Ranjan, General & Family Physician
