What Causes Tingling Sensation In The Hands?

Hi. I wake up (often a few times a night) with terrible pins and needles in my hands and forearms. The numbing and tingling is unbearable and wakes me up. It can take one to five or more minutes to go away. What could be the cause of this and what can I do to get rid of it? I do wear braces on each arm, to bed, but it doesn t seem to be helping.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Pins and needles sensation in your hand point towards neural involvement. The causes in your case might be:

1. Cervical spondylosis
2. Diabetic neuropathy
3. Autoimmune disorders involving nerves and joints

Your managment will include:

1. X-ray cervical spine
2. Fasting blood sugar and Hb1Ac

If these turn out to be normal please test for:

1. ANA
2. Rheumatoid factor to exclude common autoimmune causes

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammad Adnan Iqbal
