Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
In Sept. I was in the hospital for my liver (cause: drinking). At some point my lower legs started feeling strange. I can t say numbness, more like a tingling. I also have had edema in my left leg for about 15 years but now the swelling has gotten worse and it hurts to bend my toes. Is this related to my liver? Thank you, Sharon
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Tingling sensation what you are experiencing could be related to your present condition as well as to the effect of drinking alcohol. You might be having tingling sensation due to improved sensitivity due to overstretching and compression of the peripheral nerves as a result of oedema. Once the oedema starts to subside with treatment, such symptoms should start to improve and get better.
Also, intake of alcohol could cause certain vitamin deficiency such as Thiamine and Vitamin B12, resulting in improper functioning of the peripheral nerves. Supplementation of such vitamins in the form of intake of multivitamin capsules along with improved intake of them in the diet would help to overcome such symptoms promptly.
Hope the information provided would be helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Ashakiran S
