What Causes Tingling Sensation In Upper Extremities While Weaning Off Prednisone?

I am currently being weened off of prednisone that was prescribed for Myasthenia Gravis.I was on 60mg daily in September and currently I am taking 5mg every other day finishing up in a week For the last month or so I have been experiencing headrushes several times a day that last about 8-10 seconds followed by a tingling sensation in my upper extremities. I spoke with my neurologist and she said I should drink more water and that it most likely being caused by low blood pressure. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Tingling sensations in the upper extremities during the process of weaning off Prednisone may be attributed to various factors. Prednisone is a corticosteroid medication commonly used to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system. While it can be highly effective in managing certain conditions, prolonged use or a rapid decrease in dosage during the weaning process can cause withdrawal symptoms and side effects.

Here are a few possible explanations for the tingling sensation:
* Steroid Withdrawal: When you taper off or discontinue Prednisone after long-term use, your body may experience withdrawal symptoms. These can include tingling or numbness in the extremities. This occurs as the body adjusts to lower levels of corticosteroids, and the adrenal glands gradually resume their natural production of cortisol.
* Adrenal Insufficiency: Prednisone can suppress the normal functioning of the adrenal glands, which produce cortisol. Weaning off the medication too quickly or abruptly stopping it can lead to adrenal insufficiency, causing various symptoms, including tingling sensations.
* Peripheral Neuropathy: In some cases, prolonged use of corticosteroids like Prednisone can contribute to the development of peripheral neuropathy, which involves damage to the nerves in the extremities. This can lead to tingling or numbness sensations.

Consult your doctor for evaluation and to understand your symptoms. They can provide guidance throughout the weaning process. If the tingling sensations are bothersome or persistent, your healthcare professional may adjust the weaning schedule, prescribe medications to alleviate withdrawal symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
