What Causes Tinnitus Followed By Hearing Loss?

Good afternoon: I have rather loud ringing in my ears. Last month, I had a virus and lost hearing in both ears due to ear wax build-up and congestion from the virus. I cleaned my ears, got over the virus, and my hearing returned to almost normal (just a little loss of hearing). Now, my ears are ringing; and, when noise exceeds a certain volume, it sounds like unclear, loud, fuzzy noise inside my head. How can I get rid of the ringing?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Tinnitus is a common issue and most causes are benign and temporary. However it this lasts for a longer period then it should be evaluated.

Tinnitus can occur due to causes like a chronic ear infection, perforated eardrum, Eustachian tube dysfunction, Meniere's disease, TMJ disorders, Acoustic Neuroma etc.

Tinnitus is not a disease in itself but it is a symptom that indicates that there is some underlying illness.

I would suggest you consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Audiometry, X-ray MRI can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.

In case if ringing does not resolve then you can be advised medicines like Tricyclic Anti-depressant like Amitryptiline, anti-anxiety medication like Alprazolam, as well as Multivitamin supplements can be advised.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
