What Causes Tiredness And Twitching Sensation In Muscles?

My husband has been having twitching in his sleep of his muscles. I have been noticing that these twitches are occurring at regular intervals such as anywhere from 11 seconds apart to 18 seconds a part. These twitches are more like jerking movements and are strong enough to disturb me. These episodes continue for hours. Do you have and opinion as to what they are, should I be concerned, and what kind of doctor should he see? He wakes up very tired everyday, of course because I know he is not resting and I am worried that he is having mini seizures??? He suffers from severe headaches and has all is life. He is 54 yrs old and in good health, and takes only blood pressure medication and migraine medication when needed. . Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, My name is Dr Fahad Khan .I have read your case and I'll try my best to be of utmost help.
These muscle contractions are called myoclonus and when occur during sleep are called sleep myoclonus, this is not a life threatening condition itself but it could be due any underlying nervous system pathology such as parkinsonism, Alzhiemer's, Epilepsy etc. Sleep myoclonus can be associated with insomnia which makes the person restless and drowsy during the day.

Treatment for myoclonus is centered on medications which relax the muscles and inhibit contraction. Clonazepam is a commonly issued drug for sleep myoclonus, and when taken near bedtime has the added benefit of causing drowsiness. For this reason it should only be taken before bed, and not as a cure for myoclonus during waking hours.
But you should also consult a neurologist for this matter to rule out any underlying condition etc.
Regards.
