hello,
i can understand your concern.
meningitis is nothing but inflammation of the meninges, in this case the
bacteria causing tuberculosis is the culprit. this can be fatal if left untreated.
the main stay of the treatment are the anti tubercular drugs which include isoniazide,
rifampicin, pyrizinamide,
ethambutol. the duration of the course varies but the drugs are usually used for a period of 6 to 10 months.
if your aunt has signs of raised intracranial pressure your doctor might prescribe a corticosteroid also initially.
anti tubercular drugs produces side effects like nausea, vomiting, red colour of urine, flu like symptoms, involvement of peripheral nerves,
liver damage among others.
any side effects should be reported for dose adjustment.
a liver function test is advisable once a month for dose adjustments.
pyridoxine (benadon) is advised to be taken to reduce some of the side effects.
a healthy diet is advised. there will not be any restrictions in the diet but the patients find it difficult due to the side effects of the medications.
the drugs should not be skipped as this may lead to resistance and the treatment and cure would be difficult then.
hope i have answered your queries.
feel free to ask further queries.
