What Causes Unusual Pain In Neck?

I am 71, fit, well, and have never had any major health problems. Operation include appendix, knee replacement, vasectomy. Over the last 4 to 6 weeks I have developed some neck pain when turning in either direction, for example mostly notice it when driving, having to look behind and also when lying in bed, some positions can be quite painful. Has not been sufficiently painful for me to take any pain relief. Mainly concerned they there was no particular incident to start the pain and also that it does not appear to be going away. Thank you. Geoff.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have unusual pain in neck . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like muscle spasm , cervical spondylosis, TMJ problem , nerve compression , ear infection or heart problem like angina .

I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination and treatment . Doctor may order CT scan , MRI along with nerve conduction test and physical examination to confirm the diagnosis .

Doctor may prescribe muscle relaxant , anti inflammatory , nerve supplement along with physical therapy . For now stay calm , take ibuprofen , apply warm compresses to shoulder and arm , do light stretching exercises under expert or acetaminophen for pain and take proper rest.

Trigger points of trapezius muscle can also cause such symptoms , there are particular stretching exercises for it . Doctor may also refer you to cardiologist for cardiac problem or to dentist for TMJ problem . For now eat light and soft , sleep in correct posture and try to reduce your stress level , as such pain can also occur due to stress .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
