Hi, I have ovarian cysts that cause a lot of pain. For the past two days I have been having pain in my right upper quadrant/right side. Could this be my gallbladder? I had intercourse with my fiancé and I am in sever pain in my right side and my ovaries.what should I do?

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Ovarian pain does not occur in the upper abdomen. It occurs in the lower abdomen. The following are few causes of upper right abdominal pain:
1) Acute gastritis
2) Acute cholecystitis
3) Liver abscess
4) Peptic ulcer
5) Gall stones
6) Kidney stones
7) Enlarged liver
8) Peritonitis

My suggestions are as follows:
1) If your pain is slight, take a tab. Buscopan and wait if the pain reduces.
2) If your pain persists or increases, please do consult a gastroenterologist for clinical evaluation and tests like ultrasound imaging of abdomen and pelvis.
3) If your ovarian cyst has increased in size and enters into abdominal cavity, that also causes similar pain.
4) We can only point at a specific diagnosis only after clinical examination and ultrasound imaging of abdomen and pelvis.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

Ovarian cysts can cause pain in pelvic region, however, they usually do not cause pain in right upper quadrant. Pain in right upper quadrant could be due to gall stones. I suggest you to get ultrasound abdomen done.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
