What Causes Urinary Incontinence While On Invokana?
My doctor recently discontinued Victoza as it was doing a poor job decreasing my A1C. He put me on Invokana 300 mg tab daily. It has done a super job lowering my glucose readings. However, I now have a small incontinence problem. Leaking urine accidents. I sense a loss of bladder muscle control. I never had these events before Invokana. I m not happy with this recent development, so I m notifying my doctor next week. It s absolutely the Invokana causing this.
Suggestive of its side effect of osmotic diuresis. Invokana (canagliflozin) is commonly prescribed to treat diabetes mellitus. It acts by preventing reabsorption of glucose from the kidney and thus it promotes excretion of glucose in the urine.
Presence of glucose in the urine increases the risk of genital fungal infection and urine infection. It also causes osmotic diuresis resulting in polyuria (increase frequency of urination) which you seem to have developed. Consult your treating doctor for either a dose reduction of invokana or an alternate effective but a safer medication to control your blood sugar.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
