What Causes Urine Odor And High HDL?

For the past several weeks, my urine (guessing urine, not vaginal discharge) smells like bleach -- similar to when I each a high protein diet but I am not doing that right now. I just had a pelvic exam a few weeks ago, was told that my vagina looks great. Since then I may have been reacting to the goo that the nurse used to do the exam. Everything changed then. I could drink more water but have been put off by the taste of salt in the water from the tap since the water supply has been affected by all the salt laid down on the roads during this miserably-cold and icy winter. So, I will try drinking more water (bottled), Is there anything else going on? I don t have any pain since some discomfort after the exam. I am 63 years old and otherwise in very good health. HDL is quite high, LDL not so bad -- great ratio, though. Total is 250 and I am taking a low dosage statin which I have trouble remembering to take. If I did take it regularly, the total should come down as it came down 20 points with my less than stellar compliance.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, this cant indicate just one disorder since there could be a number of causes for foul-smelling urine. Most common include urinary tract infection, metabolic abnormality & bladder infection.

I would suggest you get urine complete examination & culture done to see if there is any abnormality. Meanwhile following home remedies may help to improve the condition:

- Drink plenty of water if you are dehydrated

- Cranberry juice is also an effective home remedy for foul urine odor. It is more beneficial to prepare a fresh cranberry juice instead of drinking a canned one.

- Lemon juice and barley water also help to relieve you of foul-smelling urine.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
