What Causes Visual Hallucinations While Suffering From Dementia?
My mother in law has demintia and macular degeneration. She had her regular vision test with no changes a week ago. Suddenly over the last 3days she has begun to see things , bushes, flowers, people etc. she says she knows they are not there but sees them. She is on no medication. A recent doctor visit 1 day ago said she had no physical issue. Test for UTI negative. No other test were performed. What can be causing this d?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is the second most common form of dementia after dementia of the Alzheimer's type.17 Prominent symptoms include parkinsonism, visual hallucinations, and cognitive fluctuations. Visual hallucinations occur in more than 20% of patients diagnosed with DLB. Probably Quetiapine or clozapine may be useful to control visuval hallucinations. If symptoms not improved please consult your psychiatrist he will examine and treat you accordingly.
